For the analysis to give a correct picture, the sample must be representative of the oil in circulation. This means the oil should be warm when the sample is taken, and drawn from a suitable point in the system.
You should avoid taking samples from the very bottom of the tank, from the very top, from taps directly on the filter, or from the return side of the filter
